Whether standing flat or hooked onto a rack, this oven thermometer measures temperatures from 150 to 550 degrees F. Its red pointer shows clearly against a matte gray background, as do the large, black numerals. The dial measures 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Very few ovens, especially older ones, accurately calibrate to the degree you have set. You may have noticed this and gotten used to it: setting the temperature 25 degrees lower than the recipe calls for, or removing your cookies a couple of minutes sooner. However, there are some recipes and occasions that call for more precision (delicate fish, soufflEs, or the holiday turkey) and that's when the oven thermometer comes in handy.
